| This pen, made by Seltzer Goods, is my absolute favorite pen. I felt the need to purchase a quality pen a few years ago and, loving dachshunds, I searched online for a dachshund pen. Lo and behold, Seltzer Goods made one! I thought about it but ultimately decided that $7.95 plus shipping was a bit pricey for a pen. Fast forward to a year ago and me receiving a Visa gift card from work. I wanted to use it as a way to treat myself, and I knew just what I wanted to buy: the dachshund pen of my dreams! It touts itself as being able to be used for seven years, so for $2.06 a year that seems like a pretty good deal. You can even buy ink refills to help extend the life even further for $1.99. I've been using this pen ever since and I have to say, it's very fun to use. The line size isn't too big for me, and isn't too delicate, either. I even purchased a few of the other pen designs as Christmas gifts this year! You can see the title of this post is Favorite #1 - I'm going to try and post about some of my favorite things each week. Stay tuned for next week's favorite - it has to do with paper that I use this pen on! :) |

On Monday I challenged myself to walk 7,000 or more steps each day and to track my food every day using the LoseIt! app. Here's how I'm doing:
Monday: 4,697 steps Tuesday: 5,437 steps Wednesday: I forgot to wear my Fitbit...yeah, and I had just written a whole post on how to use your tools! Thursday: 6,982 steps Friday: 8,412 steps (!!) I was able to track my food intake each day, even when I wanted to stop because I was clearly over-indulging on Friday night. I find it's easier to stick to a plan if I pre-load the foods into my day. I'll keep on with these goals, I definitely hope to make more progress today and tomorrow on my steps! It should be easy enough tonight, since we're going to a standing-room-only concert, but tomorrow may be more challenging since I'll be driving for a large portion of the day to visit my mom. ![]() I received a Fitbit for Christmas two years ago. It was a Fitbit Ultra and I loved it - I wore it everywhere. I set my baseline goal at 7,000 steps per day, as a way to ease myself up to the generally recommended 10,000 steps per day. When my Fitbit Ultra broke within the warranty period, the team over at Fitbit replaced it with a Fitbit One since the Ultra was phased out. The One was way better than the Ultra - it held a charge for much longer (I used to have to charge every day) and synced wirelessly with my phone over Bluetooth. No more plugging in every morning while I took a shower! As you can see from above, I'm a big fan of the Fitbit. But I'm not using it to achieve my goals. That's the point, folks - to use the tools we are given to achieve our goals. The fact that I have a Fitbit does not make me walk more; the fact that I want to walk more makes me walk more, and the Fitbit helps give me a tracking device to measure my success. The important part about creating goals is to be sure that you craft them to be quantifiable. A goal to "eat better" is less likely to be achieved than a goal to "eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day." I've been passively wearing my Fitbit and have only on a handful of occasions looked at the step counter and decided to go for a quick walk before bedtime to get in my steps for the day. Goal One: walk 7,000 steps or more per day for fourteen days straight, then increase by 500 steps every two weeks after that until I'm averaging 10,000 steps per day. Another tool I use off-and-on is my LoseIt! app. I'd like to be more aware of what I'm eating and putting into my body. The LoseIt! app is nice because it's not just for losing weight - it tracks macro nutrients as well. I'm able to add recipes, new items, and more. What's great is that it also has a bar code scanner that will auto-load the data of a ton of products from the grocery store! Goal Two: record all items consumed in LoseIt! app for fourteen days straight. I hope that this will get me in the habit of recording. What's your quantifiable goal?
Recently I won a trip to New York from General Assembly. When I found out I had won, I was browsing my email while waiting in the check out line at Marshalls. Email title: And the winner is...you! You can see why I may have been a little skeptical, but I read on...and I really did win! I was so excited, I told the check out clerk and she was unamused.
